Camp EQUIP hosted more than 350 students at Grady High School
Last week, Kids & Pros, an organization which focuses on teaching character building and life skills through the powerful platform of sports, hosted a week-long basketball and football camp at Grady High School in Atlanta. This year’s camp hosted more than 350 girls and boys ages 6 to 13 from Atlanta’s inner-city schools and neighborhoods. The camp is 100% tuition-free, made possible by sponsors like Carter.

The camp paired students with current and former professional football and basketball players for lessons, both on the field/court and off. During breaks in technical instruction, coaches imparted life skills through personal stories on how to succeed in life, even in the face of great obstacles. A new feature included the addition of “Heads-Up Football” program, which teaches instructions for safe tackling. This technique is gaining momentum as a method for reducing concussions within the sport. Read more about it on the Atlanta Falcons blog.
For the past few years, Carter has been an active supporter of Kids & Pros, participating with the organization in a variety of ways. Scott Taylor, president of Carter, served as a coach in 2011, and Malloy Peterson, senior vice president, is a member of the organization’s advisory board. Carter has a history of community involvement and volunteerism with Atlanta inner-city youth. In 1993, Carter kicked off a partnership with Atlanta Public Schools by implementing a mentoring program for at-risk children, which encouraged associates to mentor children on company time for four hours a month during the school year.
Throughout the school year, mentors were encouraged to help students prepare to achieve their goals by helping them understand the importance of doing well in school and how this will impact their future. Mentors also assisted elementary students in preparing for CRCT standardized tests through writing and reading exercises.
Through this partnership, Carter associates have provided more than 10,000 hours of tutoring, mentoring and participating in special events, including job shadowing, Principal-for-a-Day and Career Day. Our associates have also contributed funds for a new playground and computer equipment for the school. This valuable partnership and relationship with Atlanta Public Schools lasted for 18 years and will always hold a near and dear place within the history of Carter. Kids & Pros was founded by former Atlanta Falcons players Bobby Butler and Buddy Curry. Since 2002, the organization has enriched the lives of more than 13,000 students through camps, clinics and special events. To read more about the history of Kids & Pros, click here.
