Inside Carter | Meet Derek Davis

Every other week we’ll profile a different member of the Carter team, giving you a little glimpse inside the personalities that make our company so robust and unique. This week we are getting to know: Derek Davis, director of IT services. If you missed our last Inside Carter post, click here.

1. How did you end up in this industry?
I’ve always loved technology and electronics. In my early twenties, I had a great opportunity to work as a liaison during the construction of Bill Gates’s (Microsoft co-founder) residence. During my 3 year tenure, I was mesmerized to see the technology being used then. I’m even more fascinated to see the same technology finally being used today.

2. What’s one thing that people would be surprised to learn about you?
I am an avid chess player and compete regularly.

3. Best part of your job here at Carter?
Believe it or not, I am a people person and enjoy problem solving. Being in IT at Carter allows me to utilize two of my stronger traits to literally interact with everyone on a professional and/or personal level.

4. Who has been the most influential person in your career?
Bill Gates. I was fortunate enough to have multiple conversations with him while his residence was under construction.

5. Where in the world are you headed on your next vacation?
Back to Jamaica.

6. What did you want to grow up to be?
A motorcycle stuntman.

7. If you could have lunch with a famous person – dead or alive – who would it be and why?
Steve Jobs: I would love to pick his brain about tomorrow’s technology and possibly play him in a game of chess.

8. Are you a social media user? Which platforms?
Yes, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, primarily to track/monitor my college-age kids… (Shhh, don’t tell them).

9. What’s on your bucket list that you’d like to share?
I would love to fly a helicopter.

10. Favorite thing about Atlanta?
Atlanta reminds me of Los Angeles with Southern Hospitality.
