The Social Network

By: Malloy Peterson, vice president of marketing for Carter

It is obvious social media has found a place in our lives. Whether for business or personal use, people are following the trend and are engaging in social media. It is hard to believe all of this began just seven years ago with the creation of “The Facebook.”

Carter has taken a leadership position in using social media to communicate about our company and engage our clients and stakeholders. We actively manage the Carter blog, Facebook page and Twitter account to tell our story in a more controlled manner and engage with our clients and stakeholders. We launched our social media campaign in 2009, and we now have hundreds of internal and external followers who read our daily and weekly posts.

This week, the extraordinary story behind Facebook meets the big screen with The Social Network, which premieres tomorrow. For those of you who have not seen the trailer, watch the video or read this brief synopsis of the movie:

The year was 2003. Computer programming wizard Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg) was a Harvard undergrad when he laid the foundation for a social networking website that would revolutionize the way we communicate. Six years later the ambitious entrepreneur made his first million — but that was just the beginning. Despite all of Zuckerberg’s wealth and success, his personal life began to suffer as he became marred in legal disputes, and discovered that many of the 500 million people he had friended during his rise to the top were eager to see him fall. Justin Timberlake co-stars as Napster co-creator Sean Parker, with Andrew Garfield filling the role of ousted Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The Social Network is based on the book, “The Accidental Billionaires” by Ben Mezrich. (IMBD)

You may be wondering, “As a professional in corporate America, why should I engage in social media?”

Carter’s objective of engaging in social media is to present our firm and associates as thought leaders, increase brand awareness and allow clients, prospects and industry counterparts to easily find and connect with us. With more than 10,000 lifetime page views, the Carter Blog is the basis of content which comes from Carter associates who are passionate about the topics they write about. We use Facebook, Twitter and YouTube to distribute this content and give other pertinent information to our publics.

Social media is a great way to get your message across and provide thought leadership for relevant topics and emerging trends. It is an interesting and dynamic world that everyone is connected to in some way or another.
